THE STORY
Samuel Oldknow's Mellor Mill was operating by 1792 and worked for a century before a fire gutted it in November 1892. After demolition, the site returned to woodland until archaeological work began uncovering its remains.
Mellor Archaeological Trust's excavation brought the mill and its water-power infrastructure back into view. The nearby Roman Lakes estate identifies the mill as a site in its care network and provides visitor information. Check the current estate and trust arrangements rather than assuming old visitor guides still apply.
