THE STORY

Samuel Oldknow's lime-burning works formed part of Marple's industrial landscape around the end of the eighteenth century. The surviving kiln structure is a distinctive reminder of the links between local manufacturing and the canals.

Stockport Council announced completed repairs in January 2023 after a grant of more than £90,000 from Historic England and additional funding. Work included masonry repairs and internal supports. Investigations also recorded former rooms, stairs and fireplaces within the structure, with a laser-scan film made available for virtual exploration.
