THE STORY

Compstall's nineteenth-century mills and workers' housing developed together around the cotton industry. The mill complex sits beside the River Etherow and the reservoir at Etherow Country Park. Published exploration reports from 2023 and 2024 record the abandoned sections.

In October 2026, local reporting described an outline proposal for 141 homes, retaining Victoria Mill and the gatehouse while replacing badly damaged Albert Mill. This is a redevelopment proposal, not evidence that work is complete. The architect's project page explains the site's structural and flood-risk constraints.
