THE STORY
Carved into Stockport's natural sandstone cliffs, these underground shelters preserve the story of civilian life during the Second World War. Recreated settings and displays explain how the tunnels were used in the 1940s.
The council operates the Chestergate shelters as a public museum, with published admission arrangements and occasional explorer tours. This provides an authorised way to experience Stockport underground. The museum listing applies to the official attraction, not every shelter or tunnel elsewhere in town.
